Interview Tips
Interviewing is performance art. And after a while, everyone has seen the
performance. It's difficult now to be in a movie theatre and not feel after 12
minutes of exposition that you not only know what is going to happen, but that
almost like deja vu, you have seen this film before. Different actors, different
setting. Same flick.
The same thing happens in interviewing. Candidates have been prepped to ask the
same questions over and over again. Our clients get a glaze over their eyes. We
need to shake them up, walk that fine line between blowing the interview and
enchanting the hiring authority. Because you place salespeople, you have more
room.
Here are a few we use:
(Get Personal) Have your candidate ask:
1) When you made the move to come here, what was the most compelling reason?
2) What keeps you here?
3) I'm looking for a leader who I can believe in and whose coattails I can ride. Tell me your ambitions.
4) What do I have to do to get your job?
5) (End of interview) Do I have your vote? Are you going to recommend I be considered?
(Reality Check Questions)
6) You're not hiring because everything is wonderful. What are the problems that need solving?
7) Carpe Diem...companies hire short term solutions to short term problems. How can I stand out in the next 60 days?
8) I'm happy to give you references, are there people here or at some other company that I can talk to about you?
9) Profile your top performer for me. What does he/she do that makes him/her so much better?
10) When it comes to work, what keeps you up at night?
As well as the obvious:
- Bring your resume(you'd be surprised how many candidates don't)
- Dress appropriately for an interview(suit and tie)
- Close at end of interview(how do I compare, reiterate your interest)
